Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Oregon

death of parent

my distant father in law passed away

leaving no estate or planning. We

went to clean out his low income

housing apt in Oregon. There was

only a $50 dep on the place, but it

was infested with cockroaches and

full of stuff. We left most everything

there. Now I have a bill from the apt

manager for 300 towards cleaning

and removing everything. Are we

responsible for this? He chose to live

that way not us. As next of kin, are

we legally required to clean

everything out and if not, to pay for

it ourselves?

Re: death of parent

No, you are not responsible. If you had inherited any money from him, you would be responsible to pay his final bills, including the cost of cleaning the apartment, but only to the extent that you received money from him. If you did not inherit any money, you also do not have any liability for his bills.

My answer would be different if you had co-signed so he could rent this apartment. Because as co-signer, you would also be liable personally.
