Tenants are not liable for the normal wear and tear of the condition of the apartment. This would pertain to carpets, paint, floors, and appliances. This obligations of landlords and tenants are contained in ORS 90.
Because the apartment was at least partially furnished you must have had a separate agreement regarding the care and return of the personal property (furniture).
Smoking and having a cat may have been valid reasons for termination of the lease, but in themselves it is not clear that they lead to any additional damages beyond normal wear and tear. For instance, you may need to paint and replace/clean the carpet after any tenant moves out.
