Legal Question in Mediation in Oregon

Abandonment of Horse

A friend had a horse she couldn't take care of 4 years ago. I agreed to take her on a temporary basis. She was at another friends place for a couple of years until recently. Now I have the horse again. I have tried to contact my friend by e-mail, by phone and going to her house. I can't afford to feed this horse, shoe her or get her required shots. I have another friend willing to take the horse, but she is concerned about legal repercussions. What are my legal rights? I will not let this horse suffer, because of my friends unwillingness to accept responsibility for her animal. If my other friend takes her, what would be her rights?

Re: Abandonment of Horse

Animal law has grown into it's own field of law. There is a lawyer in the Portland area who is regarded as one of the leading experts in this area, named Geordie Duckler.

You can look up Mr. Duckler's contact info, or that of any Oregon lawyer, at the State Bar's website, www.osbar.org , and just click "member directory." If Mr. Duckler can't help you, he may be able to direct you to other resources or other attorneys who may be able to answer your questions.

Good luck,

Sam
