Legal Question in Personal Injury in Oregon
Invasion of Privacy / Public Disclosure
Hello. I have a legal question about the invasion of privacy. My grandmother lent me and my husband $5,000 to start our own business. My uncle recently found out. He then announced it to all the relatives at a family get-to-gether and now everyone is saying that we took advantage of my grandmother and that we are just like thieves. My grandmother is fully capable of making decisions for herself. In fact, she is giving $1,000 a month to another aunt and uncle because my uncle lost his job. What can legally be done about this?
Not sure if this matters, but I live in Oregon and my uncle lives in Idaho.

Re: Invasion of Privacy / Public Disclosure
You have no right under any law to keep secret the fact that your grandmother lent you money.
I suppose you could sue your uncle for slander, which means orally making untrue derogatory statements of fact which cause you measurable harm. Did he make an untrue statement of fact? It appears not. If he said you "were just like thieves," that is a statement of opinion and is not the basis for a slander lawsuit. Did his statement cause you measurable harm? It may have caused you embarrassment in front of your relatives, but that is almost certainly not measurable harm.
