Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Oregon

Breaking a Rental Lease to Buy a Home

My husband and I are in the process of starting to look for our first home to purchase. Currently our rental lease states that if we break a lease we have to pay for the rent on the apartment until it is rented or the end of our lease happens. We were told by several people that there is a law that says that you can break a lease in 2 circumstances, 1) if you buy a home and 2) if you are relocating because of employment. Is this a true law. And if so, where may I get proof or verification so that we may be able to present this to our current landlord. Thank You

Re: Breaking a Rental Lease to Buy a Home

There is no law in Oregon that allows a tenant to break a lease for the reasons stated. The lease you have is typical in requiring you to pay the rent until the property is released or the lease ends.
