We are a legal 501(c)(3) public charity and have set up a website under an assumed name, can we solicit, receive and distribute monies under the assumed name?

Yes, you may receive contributions, Nevertheless, you need to file an alternative name certificate with the State of Incorporation. You should also list this on your 990 filed with the IRS. Contact a tax lawyer familiar with non-profit corporations to help you with this.
