Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Oregon

Am I responsible for my deceased parents debt?

My father past away a few months ago & my mother died before him. My father had credit card debt when he past away and no assets to repay the debt. He had a living trust and I was the trustee. I payed for his funeral expenses & as much of his debt that I could with his savings which amounted to less than $5000. At this point, I have been making the payments on his debt out of my own personal money because I felt it was the right thing to do and did not know what else to do. So far, I have spent over $3000 out of my own pocket making these payments and I just cant do it anymore. I have been told recently that I am not responsible for these debts and that I should notify the credit card companies that he has past away and send them a copy of the death certificate and they should ''forgive'' his debts/ is this correct information? How do I go about doing this? I really need some advice. Thank you

Re: Am I responsible for my deceased parents debt?

You are not responsible for your father's debts. You appear to have handled the trust funds properly by paying what you could, but once those funds are gone, you do not need to use your own money to pay his debts.

You should send each of the creditors a copy of the death certificate, let them know he is dead and that there are not funds to pay anyone.
