Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Oregon
will/trust
I have a question I was asked to give an attorney my social security # and address due to my grand father and step grandmother passing I was told they were handling her affairs. it has been quite a few months I have heard nothing.I want to call and ask what why and when. But I have heard that if you ask, the person who wrote a will can put in a clause like a bomb so to speak that will dissolve anything that was put in it for me is that true? should I call and ask? or just sit and wait.Im not in the habit of passing out my personal info .I have never recieved any letters from this law firm about anything other than an e-mail from another relative whom I had little to no contact with.
Thank you look forward to any advice you can give me

Re: will/trust
If there is a will being probated go read it. It is public record. It is filed at the courthouse under the decedent's name.
Just go find out what it says. Elizabeth Powell

There is nothing wrong with calling the law firm and finding out what is happening with the estate.
The clause you are concerned about is one that "encourages" heirs not to challenge the will itself, it does not stop them from asking about the status of the estate.
If a probate has been filed you can go to the county courthouse where it is filed and look at the entire case file, which will include a copy of the will.
The attorneys probably wanted the information so that when they did the distribution of the estate they could properly report the distribution to the taxing authorities.
It is not unusual for an estate to take 6-8 months or even a year to close, depending on the size and complexity of the estate.
