On what grounds, father can get the custody of a minor child aged 6 months only? What are the chances of winning the custody of the child if the mother is mentally unsound? can grandparents claim the custody of the child through some authority letter from the father as the father had already applied for the immigration prior to the separation and now his immigration case has been successful....?

If the father proves through evidence that the mother is mentallyunsound and the life, health and well being of minor wards is in jeopordy then the grand parents can seek custody of minor ward. Now since the father had filed the custody case and he is leaving abroad or had already left abraod now either he shall seeks amendments or withdrawn his case and a new case shall be filed by the grand parents stating all the facts.
In your case your chances to win are 50 % if proved that the mother of minor is mentally sick and also that she is dangerous for the life of minor.
