Re: Recent Seizure Disorder - Preventing Employment for law enforcement

You asked about discrimination regarding employment as a LEO.

Unfortunately, you will find that you will not only be restricted from employment as a LEO but also many other classes of employment. Discrimination based on a disability is usually unlawful, but in many circumstances it is allowable where accommodation would negatively affect a basic job function or is otherwise not subject to reasonable accommodation. Generally this would include any jobs where the safety of the individual or others would be put in jeopardy by the condition. For example, with a siezure disorder, even controlled with medicine, you would also be unable to be licensed to operate trucks or heavy equipment.

You need to do research on what opportunities are available for persons with your condition.

Sorry to inform you that you have just found that many doors will be closed to you. But, there are also opportunities that are now more available to you. The federal government and many state and local governments provide for preferential hiring of persons with disabilities.

But if you do run into a closed door that should be open, please feel free to call and discuss the matter.

Regards,

Roger
