Deposit funds don't belong to U
If you knowingly deposit a check you received in error and you know that you received it in error and still deposited the money into your account is that illegal?

You asked about keeping misdirected funds.
You the answer already.
It is not per se to deposit the funds. It is illegal to deposit the funds with the intention of keeping them from their rightful owner. It is, very simply, theft.
A party in this situation has two options, return the funds to the sender or forward the funds to the intended recipient. My suggestion is to return the funds to the sender so they are informed of the error.
