Legal Question in Banking Law in Pennsylvania
A very large amount of money was deposited to my account. I do no know where this money came from. No one has my banking information and I have not taken out a loan. If I withdrew the money and the bank finds it has made an error, am I obligated under law to pay that money back?
1 Answer from Attorneys
If the money is not yours, you cannot take the money. It seems quite clear that you know that money does not belong to you. If you do take money that is not yours, not only will you be liable for the amount, but there may also be criminal penalties. If it's an error, it will likely be discovered at some point as the bank is constantly auditing itself to varying degrees, or whoever the intended recipient is will notice the discrepancy and initiate an investigation. Be proactive and contact the bank, perhaps they will reward you for your honesty.
