Legal Question in Bankruptcy in Pennsylvania

I have been divorced for over a year.

My ex-husband filed for bankruptcy against a credit card co. that we had when we were married. He claims that if I don't sign the papers as well, this company will come after me for payment, even though we have been divorced for over a year now. My ex-husband saids it doesn't make any difference since this is a bill we had together in our marriage. I have not lived at the same address as my "ex" for two years, and even though he knew where I was, phone number and all, I have not once heard from these people as far as any bill or payment is concerned. My question is, do I have to file for bankruptcy too, and if I don't, will I get stuck with a Very large bill to pay ? Thank You.

Ex-spouse bankruptcy - why (not) to file, too

The reason for filing bankruptcy is to protect some or all of your assets, including wages, from attachment by creditors with judgmentsagainst you. If you and your ex had a jointcredit card while you were married and if noproivsion for payment of that card debt wasmade in the decree, then yes, you are liableto make the payments if he declares bankruptcy.

Whether you need to declare bankruptcy, too, depends on whether you have assets which needprotecting from a judgment and whether thecredit card issuer plans to come after youfor the balance owed. It might be in yourbest economical and credit interest just tomake payments on the account, if it comes to that.
