Legal Question in Business Law in Pennsylvania

Can a company refuse to accept cash

Target refused to accept quarters as payment. To the best of my knowledge there was a case in NY where a man paid the irs in pennies. the supream court ruled that it must be taken.

Re: Can a company refuse to accept cash

You asked about paying with coin.

The U.S. government and some state entities are required to accept coin. Private merchants are not required to accept coin. Arguing with a private merchant about that fact could land a person under arrest for a breach of peace charge.

Most private parties can freely discriminate against who it wishes to do business, so long as there is no discriminatory intent or effect. This means they can refuse to take coins are require that all charges be paid in two dollars bills and Susan B. Anthony dollars. You don't want to pay in that manner then you don't get to shop there.

Roger
