Legal Question in Business Law in Pennsylvania

Ems

I volunteer for a fire/ambulance company. I also work as paid staff there 12 hrs a week. The place I volunteer does not sign my pay checks. the company that my fire department is leasing the paid staff through is. Am i able to still volunteer?

Re: Ems

You asked about volunteering at a place you work.

This is a problem many communities face. Some communities actually require rescue employees to volunteer so many hours per week. They are asking to be sued/prosecuted for violation of wage and hour laws.

Basically there is a prohibition against an employee volunteering from the same job or type of job (the actual employer is irrelevant). This would prevent a paid police officer from volunteering as a EMT in the same town he worked.

In your situation, the town probably shouldn't allow you to volunteer in the same or similar capacity for which you are employed. In other words, you could volunteer at the library without probably no problem.

Roger
