Resignment from a position

I work in a pharmacy, and the pharmacist and I joke around. I jokingly left a message on her PERSONAL answering maching stating that I was resigning just so she would call me back. No one has yet to call me back but I was notified that the Voicemail will be taken as an official resignation. Are they allowed to do this since it was not at all on company time or on a company phone, or without my written concent to resign?

You asked about resigning from work.

Unfortunately you and your co-worker were not on the same wavelength. In fact, all along your joking may have been offensive to her.

It's my belief that your message crossed a clear line and the company had no choice but to take the action it did once the matter was brought to the company's attention. Obviously she made a report of your action.

It doesn't matter that it wasn't on company time, or phone, or even that it wasn't in writing. It communicated an improper relationship, one that she saw as harassing, and if you hadn't resigned in the message then the company probably would have been within its rights to fire you.

Learn from your mistake and move on.
