the 6th amendment
the 6th amendment guarantees your right to counsel. must it be an attorney, or anyone the defendant appoints?

Only licensed lawyers may practice law in the criminal courts. The language means legal counsel. Others don't qualify.

You can represent yourself (not a good idea) or be represented by an attorney. It is not legal for a non-attorney to represent you...it would be unauthorized practice of law, a crime.
