What is imminent domain?

The term is "eminent domain." It's the power of government to take property. For example, to build a highway. 2 important points about this:

1. The Constitution requires reasonable compensation when the government exercises this power. Condemnation proceedings are used so people who have the misfortune to have a house in the way of a new freeway have due process.

2. The U.S. Supreme Court just recently heard a case about whether governments can use this power for redevelopment projects that may end up benefiting a private developer. The decision may have gigantic impact.
