Simply assault? What's that mean?

You said you were arrested for calling a cop an asshole. That's not simple assault. Simple assault is striking someone, basically.

If you were arrested for calling a cop an asshole, it's likely you were arrested for disorderly conduct. However, it's not illegal to call a cop an asshole, so even if you did, you should be able to successfully fight the charge.

Well, I didn't know a person could get arrested for that? Seems to me like that would be an infringement of free speech.

You really haven't provided any information on which an attorney can offer advise, especially since you have a specific question. Go speak with a local attorney and see what they can offer for assistance.

Do not have any further dealings with the police. Document everything and write letters of complaint (to the mayor or chief of police) if that is all you can do. You may have a case that the public defender or a local legal clinic may be able to assist with.
