Legal Question in Consumer Law in Pennsylvania

Getting the word out about a bad contractor...

We recently endured a bathroom remodel that went horribly wrong. The contractor substituted inferior materials and installed damaged materials. He even made an unauthorized charge on our credit card.

We filed a complaint with the PA AG's office, but he simply ignored the complaint. We were told our case would remain on file so that if others report him, a case could be brought against the contractor at that time.

After a prolonged dispute through our credit card company, we did receive our money back. The money was not returned from the contractor but by the credit card company as a result of their ineffective handling of our dispute.

My question is, how can I get the word out about this contractor without opening myself up to litigation? Can I send a flyer to customers currently receiving service from this contractor? Would it be best to talk to those folks instead? I would like to direct them to the AG's office if they have problems.

I would love to leave well enough alone, but no one should have to endure what we did at the hands of this criminal.

Any information is greatly appreciated!

Well you have to be careful. Start by checking the contractor's record in court. Does he sue a lot? Has be been sued? Assume he will retaliate if you push too hard and prepare accordingly. Contact the Better Business Bureau. Consider filing suit against him first. An award in your favor would be a good basis for your critique of his work. Otherwise limit your comments to factual, provable statements. It's not a good idea to contact his current customers because you will be interfering with his business and your experience with him will not protect you. You may comment profusely if contacted by someone. Keep good records. Remember that it is not likely that you will force him to make his living some other way.
