Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania

27 year old court cost/fine

In 1980, I was convicted of a small drug sale, sentenced to 90 days of work-release and 1 year probation. 27 years later I get a notice from a collection agency that they have been hired by the county court system to collect unpaid cost and fines. The courts have never so much as contacted me in all those 27 years. Surely there is a statute of limitations on how long they can wait to collect these costs, and why wasn't this addressed during the probation period? How can I have this dismissed after all this time?

This is difficult to answer. Generally you would still be on probation if the costs and fines remained unpaid. I'm not sure how the case could be closed otherwise. The civil statute of limitations is four (4) years so you probably don't have anything to worry about from the collection agency and it is so old it probably does not even appear on your credit report.
