You do not tell a bill collector anything. You must write to a bill collector. A bill collector can call your job until you tell the bill collector in writing not to call your job. You have to ask for verification/validation of the debt. You can also tell the debt collector "Please do not call my place of employment as my employer does not allow me to receive personal calls at work."

You have rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act as well as PA state law. Among the prohibitions are that the debt collector cannot contact you if they know that you are represented by an attorney.

Ending the harassment is relatively easy. What is more difficult is deciding what to do to resolve the debt. Is this your debt or a debt for which you are financially responsible? Is the debt barred by the statute of limitations?

The answers may dictate what else you say. I give free email consults and could give you better advice if I knew the details. I also can help end the harassment or resolve the debt for a reasonable fee. I can also discuss options with you if you have other debts. Please contact me at [email protected] if interested.
