Collection agency collection of debt

I've been making monthly payments on a account for several years, however the amount is not enough so the debt was sold to an agency. The agency is now saying I have to pay the full amount - payments are not an option.

It may be that the creditor, having accepted payments in the same amount over several years, is estopped from collecting the entire balance at one time. The purchase of the debt by the collection agency does not change the terms of your arrangement with the original creditor.
