Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania

Collection Co. vs. Me at District Justice

Collection Co. is taking me to district court for a credit card that they said defaulted in 2004, and they got it in 2006..This has been to at least 3 different collection co. I tried to make payment arrangements but the company wouldn't agree. The original balance was around $3500.00 with the continuing adding on late fees, finance charges and interest the company is saying I owe $8000.00 One collection company employee actually accused me of falsely obtaining the credit card, laughed when I told him what I could afford to pay, and told me to hurry and file for bankrupsy because the laws are changing and I won't have a leg to stand on. I tried to explain that I have a minor son with psychiatric problems and because of missing so many days and having to leave when he was in crisis I lost my job, and his response was ''that's what they all say''. I received the registered letter today and the hearing is less than a month away. What can I do to have them lower all the additional charges and accept an amount that I can afford to pay? I'm a single mother and our total monthly income is $1100.00 a month.

Attend the Hearing and defend. The late fees, finance charges, etc. sound to me to be inflated and, in my opinion at least, illegal. Also the collection may be barred by the statute of limitations if the initial default was over 4 years ago.
