I have been harrassed by collection agencys for approx 9 years over a debt, that I can not afford to pay. I tried to resolve debt at the time with original creditor and also wrote a letter not to call me, but they just put it in collections. They just recently called my neighbor regarding me, are they allowed to do this? It has been many different agencys trying to collect.

Re: credit card collections

There are certain protection from unfair debt collection both on the federal level and state level. The cases are fact sensitive so dates time and what the creditor said is important. How long has it been since you made a payment. There are statute of limitations in collecting the date usually four years from the last payment. You may have other defenses to a suit or counterclaims for violations of the debt collection act or unfair trade practice act. You should consult with an attorney.
