Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania

Credit Card Debt of Decased Parent

My father passed away earlier this year and my oldest sister was the executress of the estate.

The known debts that were owed were all paid and the remaining balance was distributed amongst all of us.

Two months ago, a credit card co. advised my father had a bill of about $6000.00, they have now sent this to collections as we had no proof that this was a valid debt.

There is not enough money in the estate to cover this amount.

My question is .... can this affect the credit or credit score of my sisters and I as we currently have no way to pay this debt and we were unaware of this at the time the monies were distributed???

Re: Credit Card Debt of Decased Parent

A lot depends on the time and whether the grant of letters testamentary was advertised. The Estate may still be liable but it will cost the credit card company more to collect than it is probably willing to pay. The only way to know if it will affect your credit record is to obtain a copy of your credit record and if it appears, contest the report.
