Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania
Credit Card
I had a credit card from 2002 that I never paid because of a dispute over overlimit & late fees. The original limit was $300 but with the overlimit it was close to $400. Since that time the bill has gone to collection and I believe the account may have been sold. The bill is now almost $1800. My question is: can a collection agency continue to charge interest and fees once the bill has been turned over from the original creditor? Also, if an account has been sold, can the new owner continue to charge interest and fees?

Re: Credit Card
Yes, the collection agency can attempt to continue to charge interest. There is good news, though, if that account has been sold. Judging by your zip code, it appears as though you are in Allegheny county. Collection agency cases are pretty easy to defend here, because of Judge Wettick's rulings. These agencies often buy the debt but do not obtain enough information to prevail in a court of law if you have the right attorney or enter the proper defenses.
