Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania

Can creditor share debt information with a relative?

In PA, I owe back money to my town home association for unpaid dues. They stated in a letter to me that unless the back amount was paid by a certain date, they would file charges with the District Court.

A copy of this letter was also sent to my father who lives in the same community and is a former board member.

This was done without my permision. I find this to be a violation of my privacy by releasing debt information to a 3rd party.

When I called to make araingments on the debt I mentioned my concerns and was told ''just pay on time and this won't be an issue''.

I explained that I was late due to health issues and was smacked down with ''everyone has problems'' type of answers.

I understand that I owe them money but consider this an attempt to embarass me and pressure me into paying by bothering my 79 year old father.

It is my business not my Dad's to deal with.

What recourse do I have in dealing with this situation? How can I prevent this from happening in the future?

Depending on the answers to certain fact specific questions, this may be a violation of the law, and you may be able to successfully sue the association for a maximum of $1,000 plus costs and attorneys fees.

If you want to discuss further, feel free to email.
