Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania

creditors calling for unknown bill from 1998

I received a call from a credit company today saying I had a bill due. I did not know the company or what the bill was for. I tracked down the medical service they stated and they had trouble finding what this was for. They finally said the bill was from 1998. Shocked I got the DR name, amount, and hung up. Obviously needing more info I called back, I got a new operator and she could not find the bill. Stating that she could not find it she asked me to hold. She came back and said it must be from the archieves and why would they...(she went quiet)she asked me to hold and then came back still not finding it and asking if she could call me back. My question is can I be held responsible for this 8 year old bill? I was working for a different company and had insurance that would have covered the expenses. I do not have the records as it was 8 years ago and no proof of payment.

Re: creditors calling for unknown bill from 1998

You are not responsible for an eight year old bill. You are are also entitled to documentation and verication of any debt. I suggest you consult an attorney to more specifically review the circumstances of your situation. Please do not rely on this short answer to your question. The matter must be reviewed in detail.
