Forced payment for trash collection when not using service?
My home is for sale and vacant. When I called the trash company to discontinue service they said I cannot. There is only one company available for service and I had to sign up with them just as I do water and electric. I have not paid the bills for trash as there is no service needed (home is not sold yet). Can they collect on this (they said THEY have a contract with the township)?

I think that they can if there is a contract with the municipality. But it does not make sense that you cannot discontinue service at all if you do not want it as you have already moved. If there is no one at the property then you would not need any service at all.
Did you see if your municipality has a website? If not, did you call the trash department and confirm? Did you check with the trash service and their website? Don't rely on what people tell you. Confirm it. If you do confirm it, then you are stuck. You could see if they have a reduced service program for people like you, but I doubt it.
