If someone loses a chekc you wrote to them and find it two years later can they demand you owe them the money and charge you intrest?

The check was never cashed and is now stale. I would argue that you owe the face value of the check as you never really paid. I think it is equally the fault of the person to whom you paid. They lost this and they never said anything about it for 2 whole years. I would at least make the argument that its not your fault for that and you should not have to pay 2 years of interest.
