I am afraid so. Verizon is not a lender. If you owed the money, then you had to pay it at once. If you wanted to do the easy payment plan, they will take your payments but anything over 30 days late is going to be reported on your credit. They probably did not tell you that. Making payments on a bill you owe that is due immediately does not step the creditor from reporting you as late.

What I would do is get them paid off, but if you have been doing this for awhile, your credit has already been affected so you may as well as finish the payment plan and be done.
