Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania

past debt

I was contacted by a collection agency for a debt incurred in 1985. Is there a time limit for collection. I am not even sure if the debt is valid. The amount of the debt now they clain has reached over $2,000

with interest and late fees, ect;

The statute of limitations in Pennsylvania is 4 years. That's 4 years from the time you last 'acknowledged' the debt, either verbally or by making a payment, etc.

You need to do several things...first, ask for validation of the debt, in writing, from the collection agency. DO NOT acknowledge that the debt is valid or is yours.

Secondly, inform them that the debt is outside the statute of limitations, and that they should stop calling you.

If they continue to call, you should contact an attorney (email me if you wish). You may have remedies against the collection agency.
