Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania
I have a problem with my phone company. I am on public assistance and on a program for my electric. I would get my phone bill every month and the balance would be Zero. I thought another program/ church was paying my bill. I have been out on work since Oct 2009.
Today I got a notice from the phone company stating "during a routine system check for automatic payment, the account that was paying you bill was for another customer. This situation started 14 months ago, the amount for these months equal $1317.44 which will be re-billed towards your account today."
Can they make me pay for their mistake?
I have no money as I have been out of work due to an injury, then surgery this Aug.
What can I do?
Sincerely,
Bonnie Ingerson

Fact is, you used the services and weren't harmed by the company's mistake. In fact you did well because you had use of money that you otherwise would have had to pay out.
You should call the phone company and work out payment arrangements. You may also be interested in getting debt counseling from the a nonprofit debt counseling firm near you. Consumer Credit Counseling has offices all over the state and may be of assistance in negotiating and paying your debts.
