Re: Is this possible?

There is a four-year statute of limitations on collecting on a contract (which is what a utility bill is--a contract between you and the gas company for them to provide service and you to pay).

However, the four-year statute starts to run again if you acknowledge that it's your debt. Therefore, do not acknowledge that it is your debt. Any time you talk to them, start by saying "I am not acknowledging that this is my debt." If you ask them questions or whatever, preface by saying that as well. Say it several times during the conversation.

Also, ask them to always communicate with you in writing; that way you won't make a mistake and say something that would acknowledge that it's your debt.

Make a point of checking your credit report on a regular basis to make sure that they haven't put it on there. If they do, contact an attorney. Contact an attorney if they call you and harass you about the debt. I'd be happy to discuss this with you further if you hear more from them.
