You keep someone else's property without paying for it and with the intent not to give it back? That is the definition of theft.

This is not a collections question - its a criminal law question and perhaps criminal law attorneys will provide further insight if you direct your question to them.

If it were me, I would give the item back so you will not be prosecuted criminally and then I would deal with any rental charges for the past 6-7 months by way of settlement.
