can you tell me if i was renting a store room on a month to month lease, my business was not doing good and i got be hind in my rent , mylandlord suggested me vacating the premises since i could not keep up, when i left i felt that i owed him about 4 months rent, that was 2 years ago, i had wrote him about a year ago and told him if i ever got on my feet that i would try to start paying him some rent back. now i got a letter from him, sayin i owe him like 12 months back rent and he will take me to a magistrate if needed, it has been over two years and i do not have proof of the rent i did pay, cause sometimes i gave him cash, what am i responsible for

Read the lease. If it truly was month to month, then you would owe the back rent plus rent up to the time that the lease expired. The landlord has a duty to mitigate his damages by re-letting the property. 12 months does not sound reasonable. Its not what you "feel" you owed. How much was your rent per month and how many months did you occupy the property without paying rent. This should be easy to calculate.
