can a retiree be sued for credit card debt

what can a credit card company achieve if they try to sue for monies from ssi benefits if it is the only income?

Yes, they can sue. Social Security Disability Benefits are exempt from process, except for some federal obligations so a company obtaining a judgment would have a hard time collecting. On the other hand, they can make your life miserable.
