Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania

sued by electric company

I am newly divorced from my hubby, who resided in the home when we had this electric bill in my name. It was an abusive relationship and my life was totally disrupted. I've finally settled back in and now have obtained work. As well as, a lawsuit for an outstanding electric bill from that time. Didn't mean to ignore it, just with all going on - and moving so much lately - I lost track of it. What is going to happen to me? I don't have enough to pay! Just started ''starting-over''. Bill from NJ, residing in PA now. Any advice is wonderful... Thank you.

Re: sued by electric company

You asked about being sued for an overdue electric bill.

Whose name was on the bill? If it was just yours then you will have little chance of getting out of the bill.

Instead, either contact the utility directly and work with them to find the department that can best help you set up a payment program.

You can also contact a local shelter for abused women and they will persons on staff who can help negotiate with the utility.

Also, there is the potential that you may be a candidate for bankruptcy which would allow you to truly start over.

The only alternative you may not choose is to do nothing. At the very least go to court and set up a payment arrangement through the judge. Though this is the worst of your choices. It is also preferable that you work with the utility and avoid dealing with the outside attorney representing them as the amount s/he will be seeking is large than the amount the utility will ultimately accept.

As always, you are much better off handing this matter to an attorney rather than trying to deal with it yourself.

Regards,

Roger
