Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania
unexpected illness in college
I am an adult student who had to withdraw from college classes due to illness. The college advised me that I did not qualify for a medical leave because the deadline for such an action was passed, and that the only action to take was to withdraw. I am now being billed for the rest of the semester, and have been told that I cannot return as a student until the charges are paid. I am wondering if these charges are actually valid and if the college can penalize me for being ill.

Re: unexpected illness in college
You asked about being billed for college credit classes when you had to withdraw due to illness.
colleges like any business as schedules as to when payments are due. Most Colleges set out a specific schedule as to when a student must pay for class or must withdraw in order to avoid paying for class. Usually there is a sliding scale, terminating when no money will be do the student.
There actually is no law that dictates that a college must offer a refund to an ill student that cannot attend classes. As a matter of course, many colleges will offer a compassionate refund, but that's up to the college and depends on the circumstances. Your best bet is to escalate the matter and see if you can get an allowance made.
The college is fully within its rights not to allow a student to register until they are current to let students current with all their fees.
