Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania
unfair hospital billing
I have been paying a hospital bill for the same monthly amt. for six and 1/2 years. I have never missed a bill or been late. The hospital has turned this bill of 1,117.00 dollars to an outside debt collection agency. I received the letter from the debt collection agency a day after I mailed my monthly payment to the hospital. The hospital has never notified me. When I called the collection agency they were very nasty with me. I have excellant credit, I have never been late or defaulted on any bill. Do I have any legal rights? I do know this major hospital accepts, medicare and other federal programs. What are my rights and is there any agency to report this unfair practice to?

Re: unfair hospital billing
You asked about dealing with debt collector.
This is actually a fun area especially for some in the circumstances you describe. Keep making regular payments to the hospital as you have. You may also call the hospital to discuss it.
If the debt collector is nasty then don't deal with them. Look up information about the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and hold them to the letter of the law. If they deviate do not hesitate to contact an attorney and litigate. FDCPA violations allow for statutory damages or actual damages plus attorney's fees.
