Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Pennsylvania

Will my debt harm my future husband's credit?

My boyfriend and I want to be married next summer. I have bad credit, and a judgement has been entered against me for one creditor. He owns property (his name only), and we are worried that if we marry, he would be responsible for my past debt. Please send us any information that would be pertinent.

Thank You.

Only in a tangengental way. Right now you both have individual credit. After you marry, you will still have individual credit. Some loans, Mortgage, car, etc. are preferably issued to both parties to a marriage. If your credit affects the rate of the loan tell the lender and they will suggest ways to help you out. Also, your husband to be can help improve your credit. Get a loan with your husband and if you are timely both your credit scores will improve.

The judgment will not go away. You will need to address it at some point. Was the judgment valid? Was there any fraud? If so, get an atty and fight it, but it may be too late.

You do not say of the judgment is $1,500, or $105,000. This males a BIG difference.

If it is a large judgment, you may want to file bankruptcy BEFORE marriage. If it isn't a large judgment, I suggest before you marry, when it looks less likely you have the ability to pay, that you contact the creditor, and try to work out a compromise, and a payment schedule. They would rather get $3,000 over the next year, than hope for the chance to collect say $6,000 some time in the unknown future.
