Legal Question in Criminal Law in Pennsylvania

assault with a deadly weapon

We had a family distrubance back in July. My son grabbed a knife after my husband (his step-dad) broke his door down to gain access to his room. In the struggle, my husband got cut, not intentionally, so did my son..also, my son was wrestled to the ground and scraped up. My son is now being charged with assault with a deadly weapon. He waived his first hearing..what happens now? He has a Public Defender scheduled for the next hearing. The knife would have never been touched had my husband not broken the doo down to go after him.
