bad check

in may of 06 a car dealer wanted me to write a check for 4,000 as a down payment and said they would hold this check until I received money form ssi settlement then cash it , well my lawyer took almost all of my settlement and now the dealer now has turned this check over to the police what is the time limit for this check

First, your lawyer almost certainly did not take almost all of your settlement. If this was Social Security Disability then your attorney may have received as much as 25% of the past due benefits the balance would have gone directly to you unless you had received Public Assistance in which case that would have been deducted from your share. If it really was Supplemental Security Income, your lawyer was authorized to collect 25% of the first check. From your description, it seems to me that you are indicating that your lawyers was paid directly and that you did not voluntarily pay him or her.

You should contact the local office of the public defender as soon as possible in order to defend against the charge.
