Legal Question in Criminal Law in Pennsylvania

i was charged with simple assault after an altercation with my boyfriend. the report states that he had bite marks on his arm and back and that there is no video of the altercation. i have a laceration that required sutures to which my boyfriend said i had fallen while he was calling 911. i had a previous charge that was dropped in a domestic situation with my ex-husband 3 years ago. do you have any advice on how to defend myself at the preliminary hearing without an attorney. is it possible to get the charge reduced or dropped since there is only his word against mine?
