What are the key differences between a criminal case and a civil case?

The key differences are the burden of proof necessary to reach a verdict (criminal =beyond a reasonable doubt while civil = preponderance of the evidence) and the fact that a criminal conviction can lead not only to a fine ($$) being imposed, but also a custodial sentence (jail) while a civil case can only lead to damages ($$).
