Legal Question in Criminal Law in Pennsylvania

Criminal Law Representation

I am a law school graduate who is preparing to take the bar exam in Pennsylvania in July.

I have a friend who has criminal charges pending against him which carry a large sentence if convicted. He asked me if I could represent him in court, and I said I would look into it. Is there any way I can receive special permission to do so in PA? He cannot afford an attorney and for such an important case a public defender would be ineffective.

Um.....NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best way to make sure you never get a license is to practice without one.

Also, why is it that you feel that you, with NO experience, would be competent to handle a serious case with a potential "large sentence"? Why do you feel that a public defender, who has experience handling hundreds of such cases would be ineffective, while you would be Clarence Darrow or F. Lee Bailey?

Hmmm. Methinks you have an ego problem. I am a part-time public defender, and have successfully represented people on serious charges, including a "not guilty" on an arson with 4 counts of homicide.

But, I'm sure you could have done better.

You need an attitude adjustment.

Re: Criminal Law Representation

No. That's the short answer. The longer answer is that to do so you would need to have a supervising attorney. Most likely a law professor.

How do you know the PD would be ineffective? The are good ones and not so good ones.

How effective are you going to be. Studying for the bar is a full time job. How are you going to fit in a important criminal defense.

I can pretty much guarantee you don't know how to do half the stuff you need to do. Like getting discovery from the DA. What do you do at a bail hearing?

I do civil law mostly and I would be hestitant to take on a criminal case of this magnitude without working up to it with smaller criminal cases.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me. The initial consultation is free.
