Extortion

I am trying to find out the law on extortion.

Would it be considered extortion if somone was asking for money and if they didn't get it they would tell somone who is terminally ill very harmful information? If so, is there anything I could do to stop this?

A person is guilty of theft if he intentionally obtains or withholds property of another by threatening to:

3. expose any secret tending to subject any person to hatred, contempt or ridicule
