what are the ramifications of takinng one if asked by your employer after a break in at our office?

If you were a part of the 'break-in' in any way, you should not take the lie detector. If your boss threatens to fire you as a result of your refusal, so be it. If you are part of the break in and you get arrested at a later date, the government will have the results of the failed lie detector.
If you did not have anything to do with the break in, and you know nothing about the break in, you should take the lie detector unless you have some moral objection to lie detectors in general.
