how long can they detaine you without a hearing for probation violation?

While I'm sure there is some time limit (and probably according to some Pennsylvania appeals decision somewhere), it's generally up to two months until your Gagnon/probation violation hearing is scheduled. Often, if found to be in violation, the defendant's sentence is changed to include that time served while waiting for the hearing - and then another round of probation begins. Or a new sentence can include even more incarceration time, but with credit for the time served while waiting for the hearing.

In any event, it's a good idea to have an attorney at the probation violation hearing so that the best outcome can be reached.
